Renovation
Athens, Ermou
The Madame Coco store in Ermou, the third of this three-part renovation project, required a different approach than the other two: in this case, the existing structure was to feature more prominently, yet the same overall Madame Coco aesthetic had to be maintained. Found in the historic part of the Athens city center, the Ermou store is located in an old classical building, the original details of which were to be kept intact, resulting in minimal architectural intervention. The façade therefore remained almost entirely untouched.
The indoor space, on the other hand, required a general demolition, which had to be executed very carefully. Wherever possible, the traditional structures were to be respected (notice the wooden beams on the top floor, and the brick ceiling): not only were they to be maintained, but they also set a tone that had to be complemented by the other materials. As a result, wooden floors and details were chosen instead of the black and white chess floor that featured so prominently in the Chalandri and Elliniko stores; and wooden and silver details were used instead of black ones. Despite this change in materiality, the atmosphere created remained true to the Madame Coco feel.
